Whereline Carter Shephard was born June 24, 1938 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to Seledia McQueen Carter and Sidney Carter, Sr. She was the grand daughter of Alex McQueen II and Mattie May McQueen and Sidney Carter Jr. and Elmira Carter. Whereline loved Hattiesburg and was filled with stories of family, friends and everyday life. When asked why she didn't write a book she replied that it was already written, "Coming of Age In Mississippi. " by Anne Moody. No disrespect to Ms. Moody, but Whereline was a storyteller in her own right. Whereline attended 16th Section and 3RD Ward Elementary Schools. She graduated from Royal Street High School in 1957 as class valedictorian. Her education also included the: Southern Christian Institute, Piney Woods Summer Programs, Temple Secretarial School, Washington Saturday College (where she would later serve as a volunteer instructor), and University of the District of Columbia. On August 9, 1958, she married George Leroy Shephard, Sr. That union lasted until his death in May of 2014. George and Whereline are survived by four children: Seledia, George Jr. (Kathy), Donna, and Gregory; grand children Lonnie (Tessa), Lauren, Michael, and Matthew: great grand children Kingsley and Reagan: and Godson Devin. Sisters Mary Lee and Leanetta and brothers Luthor, Jr., Reginald, and Anthony also survive Whereline as well as a host of relatives and friends. Whereline was a multi-faceted woman with many interests. She played the piano and the organ. Once in a while she would add a classical flourish to the end of a song. In high school she played the clarinet and other woodwind instruments. She crocheted, did cross stitch, and loved using the calligraphy pen. Whereline's latest project was a quilt. She was also a member of an arts and crafts group that made items for newborns, the homeless, and vetereans. She was an avid reader and loved doing crossword puzzles. She cherished being mother, aunt, cousin, best friend, hostess, teacher, and mentor. She enjoyed collecting Black Art and ethnic dolls. She loved train rides, especially that long and soothing ride to Hattiesburg. Whereline retired from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) after an interesting careerthat spanned the Federal and District governments. She held positions at the Government Printing Office, DC Tax and Revenue, and a JAG Office ( Judge Advocate General's Corps Office) among others. She was often recognized for her outstanding contributions to the workplace. Whereline considered music her ministry and served a musician for many choirs in Washington, DC, Maryland, And Virginia as well as Mississippi. This ministry began in her youth at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Hattiesburg, MS. Her last assignments were at Community United Methodist Church, Historic Berean Baptist Church, and Mount Vernon a Sunday School Teacher for Bible Class II for a number of years at Isle of Patmos Baptist Church. Whereline was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She was a good sister, aunt, friend, and s go o person. She was generous and thoughtful. Whereline was also thankful to God that she said, "bless you, God" when sharing about her nearby pain free cancer and chemotherapy. She was truly a good woman.
