IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Namon Reid
Jr.
December 11, 1945 – June 27, 2024
Namon "Putt Putt" Reid Jr. was born in Washington, DC on December 11, 1945, to Namon & Georgia Mae Reid. He attended DC Public Schools throughout his childhood, then graduatimg from Spingarn H.S. While at Spingarn, his love for baseball carried on and he evn went to play for the Semi-Pro Black Sox team after graduating. After H.S. Namon attended UDC and earned his associate degree in business management.
Namon began working for Metro as a bus operator, which he did for 20 years. While operating buses, he also started driving a taxicab part time, which he was well known for and retired after over 30 years.
In the early 60's. Namon met the love of his life , Thelma Balton, later getting married in 1975.
Namon began playing in the DC Sunday Softball League in the 60's, playing with numerous teams earned him the nickname "Suitcase Reid" because he played with many teams. While playing, he was an All Conference catcher and played in multiple All Star games. Once he stopped playing, he started his own team in 1989, the Rosedale Colts. While coaching, Namon led the Colts to participate in multiple championship games and ultimately winning two championships in 2008 & 2009. In 2011, he was inducted into the DC Sunday Softball League Hall of Fame for his contribution as a player and coach.
Namon was most known for being a loving, family man. He leaves behind his wife, Thelma (Basis, as he affectionally called her , of almost 50 years. His children, Charles (Charlie), who preceded him in death; Larry (Leslie); Jacqueline (Melvin) and Namon Reid III. His grandchildren; Michael, Ashley, Mache, Jazzmine (Patrick), Rayshawn, Courtnee, Emani, Jalynn and Amari. His great-grandchildren; Makenzie, Rio, Makel, Jrue, Tori, and his 6th great[grandchild (Jace) on the way; and his brother, Paul (Etna). He was preceded in death by his brothers (George, William, Albert & Larry) and his sister. Gwen. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
In his spare time, he loved the softball league and attending the games on Sundays when he could. Namon enjoyed watching basketball specifically for Lebron James and thinking he was a commentator, watching old western shows and movies, attending church at Isle of Patmos, where he was a member and where he also sung in the mens choir many years ago, and talking on the phone all day. He was a very busy man in his early life ( for so he said), such as being a captain in the Marines, an honorary member of Omega Psi Phi and always spoke of the time that he served in the Vietnam war, which were not true at all, but you could not tell him that. And he loved to reminisce on old times. He will be TRULY missed by all who knew him!
