IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mathen K.
Mathews
February 19, 1935 – July 25, 2020
Mathen K. Mathews, 85 years, of Howard County, MD, died peacefully surrounded by the love
of his wife and his daughter Reena and her family on July 25, 2020. Mathen, also known as Joy,
was born in 1935, Kerala, India, and is the son of K.M. Mathen and Annamma Mathew. In
addition to his parents, Joy was preceded in death by two brothers, Mathen K. George and Col.
Baby Mathew. He is survived by his beautiful wife, Sarah Mathews; son, Matt Mathews(Susan);
daughter, Reena Goodwyn(Carl), four grandchildren, two sisters, Saramma Mathew and
Susamma Jacob, and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews. He attended College in India and
graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. He continued his education in the United
States at George Washington University and obtained an MBA. He retired from IBM as a
mechanical engineer. While retired, he worked in the New Testament Church School on
Butternut Street as the 7 th and 8 th grade math teacher as well as the school treasurer. Often he was
called on to provide transportation services for the elderly members of the church. In addition, he
provided math tutoring to several children of church members at no cost, free tax preparation for
senior citizens on a fixed income, and was the Vice-President of his HOA.
Joy came to Christ in 1971 after Sister Alice from the New Testament Church (NTC) ministered
to him. He was also baptized at NTC and received the Holy Spirit in 1972. He has been a
devoted follower ever since. He has ministered to many others who have also accepted Christ.
Joy took every opportunity to share the Lord Jesus Christ because he wanted others to enter the
kingdom of heaven. Near the end of his life, he began to see many believers who had passed on.
He knew his time was coming and his reassurance was that he was a faithful believer who would
soon meet his Heavenly Father. 2 Timothy 4: 7- "I have fought the good fight, I have finished
the race, I have kept the faith."
The graveside ceremony will be held at Gates of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring MD, with
