Remembering Genell
I'm following the path God laid for me"
"Don't grieve for me for I am free.
Margaret Genell Turner was born on April 26, 1968, in Stuart, VA. Affectionally known as Genell, she and her family moved to Maryland in 1970 where she received her formal education in the Montgomery County Maryland school system. Genell graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD in 1986. She also attended Montgomery College and majored in Business Administration. Early in her career, Genell worked for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as an Administrative Assistant in Bethesda, MD and later in her career she worked for the Hospitality and Health Care Industries for many years as a HealthCare Aide, Customer Service Rep, and Retail Assistant. However, as time went on, Genell began having several medical issues. She was diagnosed with diabetes in 2006 and because of its progression, she lost half of her foot; but she went on with a smile and never complained. Shortly after her diabetes diagnosis, she fell in the shower and injured her back. While she was never able to walk easily anymore, she went on with a smile and never complained. In October 2021, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and had surgery in April of 2022. Although the tumor was benign, she suffered several seizures and mini strokes during her recovery. She went into rehab and eventually came home during the summer of 2022. In the hospital she kept always saying that she needed to go home to her sons – they were her pride and joy. During her later years, Tyrell and William were her primary caregivers ensuring her safety and wellness. Through it all,
she kept a smile on her face, and she never complained. Unfortunately, Genell suffered from many serious medical illnesses, but as most folks know, she always had a kind word to say, was full of laughter, and stayed in touch with everyone via text, telephone, Facebook, etc. As she courageously battled with her own medical issues, she also took on the responsibility of taking care of her mother by providing her with care and support as she too dealt with various illnesses.
Genell was a beautiful person inside and out who loved to attend family gatherings and travel to her family's summer home each year. She loved
babysitting, working with the young people, listening to gospel music, dancing, and shopping. She was a considered a mother to many and consistently provided nurturing counsel and advice. Genell loved the Lord and at age 14 she was baptized and joined the Parker Memorial Baptist Church in Takoma Park, MD. Steadfast in her faith, in 2004 she and her family joined the Bright Light Baptist Church in Takoma Park, Maryland where they were loyal members for many years. Genell was loved by everyone and will be dearly missed. Her friends and family are profoundly devastated by her passing. She was predeceased by her beloved mother Margaret Gerene Turner on November 20, 2016, and left to honor her memory, she is survived by her sons Tyrell (26) and William (15), her grandson Robert Anthony (6), two loving aunts Betty Vaughan and Brenda Smith Williams, and a host of family and friends. She was a loving and caring mother, daughter, niece, cousin, and friend to many. We will forever miss her daily calls and texts.😊
