Obituary

A Life we loved came to close on Friday May 29, 2015 when Larry Metcalf answered the Master's call. God spoke peace to his soul, kissed the pain and suffering away by calling him home to eternal rest.
Deacon Larry Payne Metcalf, son of the Late Dena Payne Folks on February 2, 1945 in Centreville, Va. Larry was adopted as a young child by Earl and Dena Metcalf. He was educated in the Virginia school system. He was a Drum Major known for stepping. He graduated from Luther Jackson High School. After school he joined the United States Army. He loved the time that he served in World War II and enjoyed telling stories of his adventures during those times. These stories would bring tears that would flow with laughter . When he left the Army he worked for the United States Senate as a truck driver until he retired. Deacon Metcalf was married to the Late Barbara Metcalf, he joined Mount Sinai Baptist Church where he served the transportation and security committee's, he also sang on the Male Choir. He was ordained a Deacon under the Late Pastor David Durham. Deacon Metcalf joined Greater Light Missionary Baptist Church on November 11, 2009. He was a Sunday School teacher and never missed Sunday School or Bible Study and always made sure the Church door were open for services. He sang with the Mass Choir, served the transportation and security committiees, he also sang on the Male Choir. Deacon Metcalf loved the Lord and he lived to seve the Lord and God's people and always with a big smile on his face. He would go out of his way for anyone. It was an honor for him to seve pastor Hardy and First Lady Hardy.
Deacon Metcalf was a family man and it brought joy to him to travel, cook, sing, watch plays, and old western movies with his family and friends. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life. His passion was singing. he sang with The Down Home Gospel Singers and The Emerald Singers of Washington, D.C. His favorite song to sing was Nobody's Fault but Mine. Deacon was a real sport enthusiast you would catch him cheering on the Washington Redskins by either attending the games or watching them on TV with family and friends. He enjoyed talking trash about the Dallas Cowboys with his daughter Christel, grandson Christopher and Isaiah.
Preceding him in death his wife Barbara E. Metcalf, sister Arminta Penn , Kenneth Folks. He leaves to cherish his memories, one sister Joyce Diamond, two brothers, Rodney Folks, Gregory Payne, two uncles Thomas and Lynwood Payne, one brother in law Stanley Dixon, sister in law Gerri Price and Jean Tabor. two son Thomas Dixon; Lawrence Dixon-Bey; three daughters Belinda and Tracie Brannum; SaRencia GeNea Dixon-Bey, and Isaiah Robinson. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
