Obituary

Kenneth A. Johnson was born April 8,1952 to Annie Ruth and Roosevelt Johnson in Washington, D.C. Everyone called him Kenny and he loved music. He enjoyed all kinds of music from gospel to blues, from Motown to funk. Kenny started playing music at age 12 when his grandmother gave him his first guitar. As a youngster, he would often use his lunch money to buy the latest Motown record. He was educated in the DC Public Schools and graduated from Western High School. After high school, he worked for the Veterans Administration and played bass guitar with local bands as one of his many artistic hobbies. In addition to music, he loved photography. While taking pictures in the park. he met the love of his life, Barbara McCaskill, when they were both 18 years of age. In 1977, he enlisted in the Army and took his wife Barbara and daughter Kennita to Lawton, Oklahoma where he was stationed. While in Oklahoma, he took classes at Cameron University. After his overseas deployment in Germany, he rejoined his family in the DC area. A couple of years later, the family expanded to include a son. Kenneth Javae. Kenny worked for General Electric (GE) Information Services for 18 years as a Network Support Specialist. His work allowed him to travel up and down the east coast as well as to places like Mexico, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. After retiring from GE in 2002, Kenny worked for M.C. Dean as a telecommunications specialist at the Baltimore Convention Center until he officially retired in 2014. In 2005,Kenny and Barbara welcomed their grandson Kaleb, the light of their lives. Over the years, Kenny played the bass guitar with local bands such as Finger-Pop, Butch Grant and the Crossfire Band, Dr. C and No Patients, The Gospel Persuaders, Dr. Feelgood Band and Show, Adelphi Blues, Full Power Blues and Mojo Priests. He loved to write songs and arrange music. He joined the DC Blues Society, where he would take part in the "1st Sunday Blues Jam" every month and volunteered to help at festivals, fairs, and other events. Kenny would delight, entertain and educate small children with his " Mr. Boom" stories. Mr. Boom was a larger-than-life character with a deep voice that could always learn something new and teach you something new in the process. He would make up these stories on the spot, but he told them like they had been handed down for generations. To inspire and create the next generation of musicians, he would give children musical instruments as gifts or allow kids to "bang" on the instruments in his band room. He loved it when the sounds would change from "noise" to music. Never afraid to speak his mind, he mentored many kids around the neighborhood about staying out of trouble and was always a shinning example of doing the right thing. He encouraged everyone, young and old, to continue their education as far as it would take them. Kenny loved talking to people, from giving sage advice to debating current events. He was always available to help a friend in need from moving to fixing household electronics to DJing a party. A devout vegan. Kenny was always coming up with new dishes and desserts. Kenny was an artist. His home is covered with his many works of art including a 5 foot tree that is made entirely of wire coat hangers. Kenny will be remembered as an upbeat, caring and compassionate man with a kind and positive word for everyone he met. Kenny was preceded in death by his parents Annine Ruth and Roosevelt Johnson, his brother Roosevelt Jr., his brother-in-law James Knight, nephews Airrion Kenneth Johnson, Airrion Kenneth Ali Johnson and Derek Tucker.
