Obituary

On Saturday, August 31, 2024, the Lord in His infinite wisdom, mercy, and grace, called Janet Gloria Reid to her eternal rest. Janet was the youngest of two daughters born to the late Aaron and Mildred Gaskins on November 24, 1947, in Warrenton, VA.

Janet attended William C. Taylor High School in Fauquier County. Janet briefly attended Virginia State, before deciding to attend Strayer Business College. After business school, Janet moved to Washington, DC to work for the Federal Reserve Board (FRB), where she remained for 40 years until she retired as a Section Chief in 2007. During her tenure at FRB, Janet decided to finish what she started and resumed her studies to obtain her bachelor's degree from the University of the District of Columbia. She graduated Cum Laude in 1996 and was a member of Delta Mu Delta, an international honor society for business administration.

On August 2, 1969, she was united in marriage to her "rock", Eric Reid. To this union, two daughters, Ronda and Tanya, were born.

In her early years, Janet attended Mount Morris Baptist Church in Hume, VA. During her union with Eric, she joined the Isle of Patmos Baptist Church (IPBC), where Eric was already a member. At IPBC, she served as the church's treasurer for more than 10 years. Additionally, she was the treasurer and a member of the Senior Christian ministry.

As an advocate for her community, she was a member of the Woodridge Civic Association for close to thirty years and served as recording secretary for approximately 20 years. As a board member and a founding member of the Woodridge Civic Fund, she was a part of the team that helped bring $1.25 million to fund various programs to enrich the community. As a part of her advocacy, she facilitated and coordinated several petitions, notably a petition that led to the Office of Planning preparing an "overlay zone to create a better transition of uses and physical buffering between residential and industrial properties."

"Study long, study wrong" was a phrase she'd like to say when playing cards. Janet loved a good game night, especially one that involved playing cards. She loved playing Bid Whist with her sister, Pat, her late sister-in-law, Janice, and her late brother-in-law, Byron. Later in life, she was often the "target" in Phase 10 to her daughters and cousins; no matter how many phases behind she was, she always seemed to catch up and win.

A straight shooter, whether aiming to win a game of cards or aiming with her shotgun to knock a clay pigeon out of the sky, she rarely missed. For many years, Janet was the only woman competing against the men in the family's annual North vs South shooting match in Lancaster, SC. In 1997, she showed the 'boys' how it was done when she took 3rd place in the shotgun competition. With a strong will not to allow her circumstances to defeat her, even after being partially paralyzed, she figured out a way to hold a rifle and shoot during the competition.

Janet had many interests and talents. She was an animal lover, an admirer of jewelry, so much so that as her mind started declining, she would stash jewelry wherever she could reach; her socks, her "bra stash", or any other stash spot she could think of. She was an unofficial doula, supporting her daughter, Tanya; niece, Sylvia; and granddaughter, Charmaine, as they delivered their first children. As a "Redskins" fan, she enjoyed making her Cowboy family members sit on the porch to watch the game through the window. She also enjoyed putting together furniture, painting the interior of her house, fishing, making jewelry, and doing acrylic nails, among other things.

Janet was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend who will be missed by those she touched. She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Eric, her daughters, Ronda Adams (Earl) of Waldorf, MD, Tanya Reid of Washington, DC, Ina Wilson (Will) of Jacksonville, FL; an honorary son as well as an integral member of her care team, Robbin Best; three granddaughters, Journey, Justice, and Charmaine; one great-granddaughter, Harmony; one sister, Pat Lewis; three granddogs: Khodi, Cheeky, and Nico; her special friend and carpool partner of 30 years, Rose Barnes; her 'Golden Girls', Kathy Ross, Donna Milbourne, Barbara Driggins, Ramona Monroe, Pat Barnes, and Veronica Harris; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
