Frank Mitchell Jr., lovingly known to all as “Skip,” passed away on November 26, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, mentorship, and fierce devotion to family and community. He was born on January 15, 1957, in Memphis, Tennessee, at U.S. Naval Hospital, where his journey of service, competition, and compassion began. The nickname “Skip” came from “Skipper,” a name given to him by his father, and it followed him throughout his life—becoming synonymous with his leadership, confidence, and larger-than-life presence. Skip was the beloved husband of Brenda Fay Mitchell, with whom he met at Shelby Community College in 1976. They were married on March 10th, 1978. He was a proud and devoted father to his two children: Tanesha Mitchell, Frank E. Mitchell III, and his wife Theresa Mitchell. His children were a constant source of pride, and his influence lives on through their strength, determination, and competitive spirit. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Mitchell Sr., and his mother, Eleanor Rose Mitchell.” Skip is survived by his brother, Erick Mitchell, his sister-in-law Jennifer Mitchell, and their children, Carter and Thalia, his step mother, Joyce Mitchell along with many cousins and extended family members whom he deeply loved and cared for. Skip, received an Associates degree in Business Management at Prince George’s Community Cllege, in 1989 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management at the University of Maryland. Skip dedicated much of his life to mentoring young people, whether through his work at the Montgomery County Public School System or his involvement at the neighborhood community center where he was called the Dragon Tamer. He believed deeply in the potential of youth and gave generously of his time, wisdom, and encouragement, leaving an impact that will be felt for generations. A natural competitor, Skip loved basketball and thrived in friendly (and not-so-friendly) competition—whether it was Bid Whist, Spades, ping pong, video games, or pool. His competitive nature, sharp wit, and passion for sports and current events were well known and continue to live on through his Above all, Skip will be remembered for his big heart, unwavering loyalty, and commitment to lifting others up. He leaves behind a community forever changed by his presence and a family forever strengthened by his love. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. children and all who shared a game, debate, or conversation with him.
