Obituary

On Thursday April 19, 2018. Esmena Simms made her transition into eternal rest; surrounded by family, Esmena was born on November 1,1925 in St. Catherine, Jamaica, to Arthur and Eugene McLaggon. She was one of eight children; all of whom predeceased her. Esmena was educated in the St. Catherine public Schools. An avid reader, she read everything in sight...including her Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. As a young adult, Esmena met and married the love of her life, Clifford Simms. He preceded her in 2003. From this union, eight children were born; Panceta, Cynthia, Neville, Lola, Dorothy, Voyris, Errol, and Oswald., In addition, she raised many other family members. Esmena was a very private person; however, she never turned anyone away who needed help. Esmena was a long time member of the Guys Hill Church of Christ, Jamaica, where she served as Deaconess and Senior Choir member. Esmena lived an exemplary life for her family, friends, community and everyone that knew her. Esmena raised her children to be God-fearing and to be respectful to everyone. As children, every night, we had to read the Bible and listen to the long...looooonngg prayers, while on our knees. Most nights, we would try skipping some verses to shorten the reading. However, she would stop us because she knew something was missing. She would make us read it correctly, and sometimes, she would add chapters with longer verses. We learned early ... that she was always a few steps ahead of us. She taught, demanded, and expected only the best from her children. They had to be polite, appropriately dressed, and God-fearing. Esmena's main focus was her family, and Church and school were of the upmost importance. Esmena migrated to the United States in the early 1980s and lived with her daughter, Lola. Although, she lived here for many years. Esmena always called Jamaica home. She would travel back frequently. While in the U.S. , she made the Glenarden Church of Christ her home. Esmena/ Grandma leaves to cherish her fond memory: Her 8 children, 26 Grandchildren, 39 Great Grand, 9 Great Great Grandchildren, and a host extended family, She was blessed to have seen four generations. Her presence, quiet spirit, and devotion to all will be greatly missed.
