On Monday May 29, 2017< Duncan Cunnungham finished his course and his spirit transitioned from this life's journey to glory at his new home at Visionary Square Apartments in Washington, D.C. He was not alone, when God called him home his brother. Rodney was speaking to him on the phone, when he quietly slipped away.A TIME TO BEGIN LIFE'SJOURNEY & ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGEDuncan Leon Cunningham was born on May 25, 1935 in Washington, D.C. to Simeon and Gladys Cunningham, Duncan was named after his mother's maiden name. He was the Oldest of three children Joyce Cunningham Freeman and Rodney Cunningham. As a young child it was not uncommon to see his big sister Joyce push him around the neighborhood in a baby carriage. Duncan always watched over his little brother, Rodney with loving authority. Duncan started his academic career at Mott Elementery School and then went on to Garnett Patterson and Banneker Junior High Schools. He graduated from Dumbar Senior High School in 1952. A TIME OF SERVICE TO HIS COUNTRY After grqduating high school, Duncan went into the Army to serve his country as a Communications Operator. Duncan served his country from October 6, 1957 until October 5, 1956. A TIME TO CREATE A CAREER Duncan acquired a position as a mail-carrier for the United States Postal Service and then worked for Bamels Patio and Furnture as a dispatcher and truck driver. He enjoyed his jobs and was blessed to be able to retire.A TIME OF LOVE AND FAMILY Duncan had five beautiful children Michael, Angela, Ronald, Dana, and Barbara with his first wife, Eula. He then met his long time loving companion of 20 years, Hilda who he was a father to her six children, Nathaniel,Nathan, Edith, Shelia, Valerie, and Ella. Duncan loved his children greatly and tried to do his best for all of them. A TIME TO TRAVEL Duncan enjoyed holiday family functions at his home near Meridian Hill Park July 4th picnics in Silver Spring, MD. , many good times on the weekends at his place on Mt. Olivet Road, N.E. Washington, DC., family reunions at Sandy Point and traveling to Florida to visit his sister. Joyce and her Husband Jimmie. A TIME TO CELEBRATE Duncan had over 10 years clean and sober and he was very proud of that. He spoke to others who struggled with the same issues sharing his story to help others cope, Duncan was also a devoted Washington Redskins Fan and watching football was one his favorite pastimes. A TIME TO EMBRACE EACHOTHER Duncan leaves behind his life's legacy; his devoted siblings Joyce (James) and Rodney; his loving children Michael (Linda), Ronald (Michelle), Angela, Dana, and Barbara (Martin) as well as Nathanial, Nathan, Ella, Edith,Sheila, and Valerie. To his beloved grandchildren and his adoring great-grandchildren Duncan loved you with all of his heart and he leaves his cherished memories to all of you. Tohis caring nieces, nephews, and Godchildren remember the good times and smile when you think of me. And to the host of endearing relatives, and friends, thank you for the laughs and memorable moments.
