Doris Louise Evans was born on December 8, 1932, in Washington, D.C. to the late William H. and Julia Walker Evans. She was the oldest of three children. She grew up in Washington, D.C. with her sister Audrey and her brother William FI., Jr who both preceded her in death. Doris attended the D.C. Public schools, and in 1951 she graduated from Francis L. Cardo2o Sr. High. After graduating, she was hired by the Federal Government and began a 37-year career with the Central Intelligence Agency.
In 1952, Doris and the late Donald Alonzo Carter were united in marriage, born from this union were two sons, Steven Alonzo and Eric Anthony. She loved and enjoyed her family and the beautifill life they lived together. She was widowed in 1979. Once she became a grandmother, Doris devoted much of her time to her wonderful grandchildren. In 1991, Doris married Andrew Marcellous Britt, a loving and devoted husband and they shared a romantic life together.
At the age of 16, Doris was baptized at Beulah Baptist Church where she also taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. In 1954, she converted to Catholicism and she attended St. Gabriel Catholic Church in DC, and Our Lady of Sorrows in Takoma Park, MD. In 1993, she became a member of New Dawn Baptist Church in Hyattsville, MD, where she served on the Sr. Usher Board for 10 years. After suftering a stroke in 2015, she became an honorary member.
Doris loved encouraging and helping others, and she lived her life to the fullest. She was a member of various community and charitable organizations including The Questers, Inc.; The Julia West Hamilton League, Inc.; The Cardozo Alumni Association; The National Council of Negro Women, and the NA AGP. She was also a member of two social clubs: The Jolly M's and Bharat Bharati, Inc. which also donated to charitable causes. Doris was a charter member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC).
Doris was very active. She loved socializing, taking photographs, attending plays, and after her retirement she joined an aqua aerobics class but most of all she loved travelling. She travelled to most of the world's continents. Some of the places she toured were London, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, Morocco, Costa del Sol, South Africa, Ivory Coast, Monaco, Senegal, Jamaica, Nassau, Freeport, Malaga, Tangier, Granada, Canada and Hawaii.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Andrew; sons, Steven and Eric Carter; daughters-in-law, Melissa B. Carter and Elisabeth Youmbi Carter; granddaughters, Chyla and Kimberly Carter; grandsons, Eric, Kevin, Anthony and Daniel Carter; great-grandson, Kevin Carter; step daughters Constance May (James), Angela Frazier (Robert), and Patricia Britt; step granddaughter, Crystal Murphy; step grandsons, Antonio and Christopher May; step great-grandsons, Marcus and Kaedon Williams; nieces, Brenda Epps (George) and Rhea Frazier (Bennie); nephews, Robert, Maurice (lecia), Anthony (Marcy) and Charles Pierce, Gary Evans (Sherry), William Evans HI, and Jeffrey Singley (Rhonda); sisters-in-law, Delores Evans, Mary Britt, and Isabel Britt; brother-in-law Leon Britt; best friend, Faye Wade; and a wealth of cherished family members, godchildren, club members, and friends.
