On July 16, 1932, Harold and Pearl McDavid of Brooksville, Mississippi, bore their sixth child, Clifford McDavid. Clifford was reared in love within the large farming family. He was a quiet, mischievous child, always thinking and tinkering with something. Clifford or "Gag" as he was affectionately called by his siblings, loved to fix and build things, which evolved into a life long vocation as a brick mason, contractor and "jack of all trades." Upon graduation from the Noxubee County school system, Clifford joined the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. After basic training at Ft. Hood, Texas. E-5 McDavid was deployed to Germany assigned to read maps for the military. After returning from military duty, Clifford joined in matrimony his life-long friend and love Velma Tate. The two migrated to Youngstown, Ohio with the intent of building a life there. Clifford worked at Sheet and Tool Steel Mill as a plate setter. The desire to advance inspired him to attend technical school in New Castle, PA. earning a certificate in Brick Masonry. Armed with this trade, Clifford moved his wife and daughters to Washington, DC in the early 1960s. In Washington , he furthered his education at Phelps Technical School studying blueprint reading before embarking upon his vocation of bricklaying, eventually working as contractor and forming his own company. McDavid Masonry. He was a stern but fair taskmaster in his love of building. The many people throughout the country who worked with him state that would give you a chance ... one chance to do it right! Clifford would hire anyone that had the desire to work and teach them what he knew. That included his daughters who all can mix cement and handle tools with the best! Clifford or "Mr. Mack" was a generous man, straightforward in his speech and wisdom sharing with many throughout the city. He was a quiet, observant man that touched the lives and hearts of all that he met. Since his death, many have revealed to the family the words he shared with them, deeds he performed for them, and the impact he had on their lives. Clifford McDavid passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. He is preceded in death by his parents Harold and Pearl Lewis McDavid, and brothers Lewis, Thomas, Howard, Bennie, Lonnie and Claude. Clifford leaves to mourn his best friend of 59 years, wife Velma; daughters Charlotte (Eddie) Tate, Chicago, IL; Carolyn (Willie) Harris, Durham, NC; Venita (Wesley) Cooper, Clinton, MD; his "baby" Stephanie Marshall, Washington, DC; and godson, Elijah (Cheryl) Brown, Washington, DC. From his girls came eight grandchildren, LaQuinta, LaTron, LaShoma, LaQuida, Chicago IL; Quincy (Steve), Durham, NC; Leighton, Yves, Raina, Clinton, MD, and two grand godchildren Elijah, Jr. and Eleanora (Washington, DC). He was blessed with seven great-grandchildren. "Opa" had a very special bond with great-grandson Thaddeus Isaiah Clifford McDavid. He also leaves to mourn siblings Harold (Lula) McDavid and Herman (Annie) McDavid, Youngstown, OH; Robert (Darlene) McDavid, Brooksville, MS; Maude Duncan, Compton, CA; Fannie (Jasper) Jones, Memphis, TN; Audrey Tate, Atlanta, GA; George McDavid, Washington, DC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives all over the world.
