Charles Thomas was born on February 14, 1936 in Midway, Florida. He was the thirteenth child born to the late Thames and Lizzie Thomas.
After graduating from Gadsden County Schools, Charles decided to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Navy. An avid usher, and lover of the water . Charles enjoyed traveling the world on assignment. He especially loved his time in Italy.
Upon being honorably discharged, Charles briefly returned to Florida before migrating north to Washington, D.C. where he met and married. Christine Jones (Thomas). He joined Christine's church _ New Southern Rock Baptist Church _ and quickly became a devoted member. He also joined the well_dressed, and legendary., Male Chorus.
Charles worked as a mail sorter for The World Bank for over thirty years, until his retirement in 2010. When he wasn't working, attending church, or spending time with his family. Charles was undoubtedly engaging in his favorite pastime_fishing. On warm summer Saturdays, Charles would spend countless hours on the Chesapeake Bay, catching a cooler full of Spot, Perch, and Catfish, which he would bring home for Christine to try. Oftentimes, he invited neighbors over to enjoy his haul. He was always eager to share a meal with any and everybody who could pick up a plate.
Charles was a loving, hard -working man of God, who always brought joy and laughter to anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He departed this life peacefully, in his transition to glory on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md.
Preceded in death by his wife, Christine, daughters, Janice Durant and Ronnya "Ronnie" Taylor, and twelve of his fourteen siblings, Charles leaves to cherish his memory and legacy; sister, Mayfair Duckworth; brother , Lorenzo Thomas; daughter, Charlotte Thomas; granddaughters, Anika powell (Robert) and Lawanda Thomas; grandsons Henry Durant III (Trey) , and Shaun Taylor (Jessica); great grandchildren Ahmee Durant, Leah Durant, Ola Durant, Kendyl Powell, Jaxton Powell, Kai Taylor, Shaun Taylor II, Zara Taylor and Breyanna Walker; niece Mary Brisbon (Curtis); nephew Charles "CJ" Payne Jr. (Donnette); Godchildren, Eugenia Royster, William Royster III, Charnisa Royster and Janae Ronnya Royster; and numerous relatives and friends.
A devoted father, loving husband and faithful Christian, Charles is deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
