On Tuesday March 19, 2019 at 5:34 p.m. Bessie Serrette flew away from this earthly plain to a better sphere of usefulness, where no storm clouds abide. She called this plain "Home". Born Bessie Lucille Abrams on September 15, 1936 in Augusta, Georgia, she was the third child of Jesse and Nancy Abrams, following Mildred, her sister, and Jesse, her brother. Baptized at an early age at Cumming Grove Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia, she enjoyed Sunday School BYPU and singing in the children's choir. Bessie attended the local public elementary schools and Immaculate Conception High School. There she achieved high honors in French and received the Stenographer's Award for being number one in the class in shorthand typing. After high school she attended, The Augusta Secretarial School and graduated with honors. She was employed by the pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company and later the Atlanta Life Insurance Company. In March 1957, she met US Army PFC Alexander Serrette of New York City at a USC religious service while he was stationed at Fort Gordon. After a brief courtship, they fell in love and married. From this union they had five children; Ave Meria, known to all as Ava, April Camille; twins Peter and Paul; and Nancy. After they were married. Bessie left her hometown and moved with her husband Alex to The Bronx NY and then to 227th Street in Laurelton, Queens where they lived from 1969 until 1990. She and her family joined Calvary Baptist Church on Sulphin Blvd in Jamaica Queens. Bessie's career life in NY included various executive, administrative positions. Her resume includes posts at General Electric, the Long Island Rail Road, the United Nations and Gouverneur's Hospital. Her civic duties included two terms as Captain of the 227th Street Block Association and City of New York Police Department Auxiliary Police Officer. She was an avid book reader. Bessie enjoyed listening to gospel and classical music and loved the vocalities of Luciano Pavarotti, Leontyne Price, Beverly Sills, Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba. She also loved collecting and refurbishing antique furniture, sewing holiday decorations writing poetry and play writing a religious play entitled ; The Call of Dust. Bessie was also an exceptional gardener and produced beautiful flower gardens at her homes in New York and in Maryland. Fond Memories will be forever cherished by her loving husband of 62 years, Alexander; three caring daughters, Ava, April and Nancy; one son in law, David; a daughter like-like niece Linda; a son like nephew Robert; one devoted sister Mildred three grandchildren, Aria , Knowledge and Shalea; a great grandson, Jayden; a grandniece, Cherkita a grandnephew, Roberto; a great grandnephew. Themari; a cousin, Anne McPherson and a host of family and friends.
